Dining in Durango

Durango, Colorado, has the reputation as being the culinary center of the Four Corners. Its restaurants offer a wide variety of foods and cooking styles. Importantly, most also offer quality food and service. All of these restaurants, ranging from fine dining to barbecue, have been reviewed by Red Cliff Guest House's founder, Art, or were recommended to him. Those Art selected for this listing are indicated with a **.

We encourage our guests who have stayed in our vacation home to give us all positive or negative feedback on the restaurants and businesses that they have experienced while staying with us. This listing is not intended to be comprehensive. We recognize there are many restaurants in town that may be better than some on this list. Once they are tried and proven or fail to live up to scrutiny, we will add them or delete them.

Entertainment

Durango has become a haven for musicians. The Bar D Wranglers will give you a show to rival county and western entertainment anywhere. The community strongly supports the arts as is evidenced by the long term success of "Music in the Mountains". On an impromptu note, stop in for lunch or a beer on Saturday at the Irish Embasy Pub and you will probably be entertained with Irish melodies played by local musicians that just "drop-in". Shows at the Strater Theatre have been delighting guests for over 40 years. Enjoy really good entertainment in Durango.

Snow Sports

Durango is surrounded by a winter wonderland for snow sports. Downhill skiing and snowboarding are probably the most popular activities, but snowshoe hiking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, sled and sleigh rides are all available for skiers and non-skiers alike.

There are three ski areas around the area:

Purgatory Mountain is a short 13 mile ride from the Red Cliff Guest House.  Over 1,300 acres with 88 trails offer great skiing and boarding for all ages -- for children or novices to the advanced.  With the number of trails and the multiple lifts on the mountain, Snow Country Magazine ranked Purgatory "the second-least-crowded ski area on the continent."

Silverton Mountain is about 1 hour north -- 43 miles.  Skiing here is for adventure seeking advance and expert individuals only.  There are over 1800 acres serviced by 1 lift and by helicopter.  There is no grooming and no clear cut runs.  At certain times of the year the slopes can be accessed only with a guide.

Wolf Creek is an area that boasts the most annual snow in Colorado  -- 41 feet!!  Seven lifts will carry you to over 1000 acres of slopes.  This is about 80 miles ( approximately 1 hour 30 minutes) from the Red Cliff Guest House.

Snowmobiling opportunities are abundant.
Sled and sleigh tours as well as snowcat tours can take you to unblemished winter scenes.
Cross country skiing or snowshoeing can be very enjoyable --
many enjoy this at Mesa Verde NP. Guides will take you to unforgetable locations.
